Paul Hindmarsh Music Publishing and Production

PHMPublishing is the trading name of Paul Hindmarsh Music Productions Ltd. I established the name to publish my own realisations and performing editions, principally of the music of Wilfred Heaton (1918-2000) and Frank Bridge (1879-1941). PHM Publishing also makes available new and revived music for band in its New Music for Band and Heritage Series.
This channel presents the audio of PHM Publishing titles, all of which can be viewed and purchased from www.paulhindmarsh.com or www.justmusicuk.com, and also of titles published by Faber Music Ltd, www.fabermusicstore.com

i. Prélude – La Région; ii. Nocturne – Chasseral; iii. Toccate – Braderie
Performed by The Fairey Band (Garry Cutt) at the 2019 Royal Northern College of Music Brass band Festival, Manchester (UK).
John Golland (1942–1993) first encountered the brass band in his twenties, when he took up the euphonium and joined the Stalybridge Band. Having trained as a teacher, he went on to study piano and composition part-time at the Royal Manchester College of Music. Conducting and writing for brass and wind bands went on to dominate his career, including many prestigious concert commissions, particularly in Switzerland.
Bellna is the Latin name of the town Bienne (in French), or Biel (in German). Golland was a frequent visitor to this Swiss town and became a good friend to its brass band, for whom he composed his Piano Concerto (1971) and the overture In Celebration (1985). Bellna was written in 1989 to mark Brassband Bienne’s 25th anniversary. The first movement celebrates the region itself. The haunting central nocturne was inspired by a night time drive, in the light of the full moon, up the highest mountain pass in the area. The energetic finale describes the atmosphere of La Braderie, a three-day feast in Bienne itself.
In this published version of the music, the first movement was shortened by Paul Hindmarsh, at the suggestion of the John Golland Trust and the publisher Kirklees Music, to create a more balanced form and to offer a more suitable work, in terms of duration and difficulty, for brass bands of first or championship level to perform in concert or contest. The second and third movements can be performed as separate items.
This performance is uploaded with kind permission of the John Golland Trust.
Score and parts are published by Kirklees Music, 609 Bradford Rd, Bailiff Bridge, Brighouse HD6 4DN www.kirkleesmusiuc.co.uk

In December 2018 two Sheffield choirs - the Philharmonic Chorus and the University Chamber choir premiered two carols set to music which I adapted from the work of Sheffield born composer Wilfred Heaton (1918 - 2000). Balulalow is a second setting based on a lilting miniature originally composed for Heaton's grand daughter to play on her clarinet. The melody of A Shepherd's carol was composed in 1948 for a production of W.B.Yeats' play The King's Threshold at Sheffield's Little Theatre. With a little research i discovered that the tune fitted the metre of one of the so-called Sheffield carols that are still sung in the pubs of the region. The pubs may be silent this year, but I hope my arrangement will kindle a little festive spirit.
Merry Christmas!

An arrangement (with composed cadenzas) by Paul Hindmarsh from Jim Parker's music composed to accompany Sir John Betjeman's poem Beaumaris. This version was prepared with the composer's permission in 1991. The solo parts are evocatively rendered by the late Michael Wildgust and Dean Wright (now Principal Trumpet, Welsh National Opera Orchestra)
