Composer, conductor and teacher Wilfred Heaton (1918 – 2000) made these arrangements of well-known classical lollipops – three dances and one classic finale in dance style – for the octet of the famous Black Dyke Mills Band in the 1970s. Heaton was the resident musical director of the band for six months in 1972-3. When the band’s then principal cornet, James Shepherd left the band to form his own ensemble, James Shepherd Versatile Brass, the arrangements also became part of his new repertoire.

In this first published edition, alternative parts are available enabling three of the pieces (2-4) to be performed by orchestral brass as well as by brass band instruments.
