Scherzo for brass quartet (Wilfred Heaton) PDF

[2 cornets or trumpets and 2 trombones, or horn (in F or Eflat) and euphonium]
This example of early Heaton dates from 1937, when the 19 year old composer played the cornet in a quartet made up of friends from the Sheffield Park Corps Band of the Salvation Army. The hymn-like character of the middle section reflects the work’s origins, although the off-beat bass line and the bouncing rhythms of the outer sections reveal the music of William Walton had on the young composer. The work was first performed by Royal Danish Brass and has also been performed in a version for conventional brass quartet. It makes an interesting addition to the repertoire of this somewhat neglected genre.
