Description

Two English traditional carols collected and arranged by E. M. Leather and R . Vaughan Williams. They were sung to VW by Mrs. Esther Smith of Dilwyn, near Hereford. In 1920 his harmonisations were published in TheOxford Book of Carols, with different texts – Joseph and Mary, a traditional 17th century carol, and Coverdale’s Carol, translated from a 16th century German source by Miles Coverdale. Three verses of Coverdale’s Carol are folded within four of the more animated setting of Joseph and Mary. The arrangement is unfied by a short motif derived from the accompaniment to its second verse.
