Description

In 1992 Wilfred Heaton composed a Berceuse Elegiaque as a study in legato playing for his granddaughter Emma to play on the clarinet. It was conceived as a theme for a series of four study variations, which were never composed. Being so short, another poignant melody, from incidental music to the Pilgrim’s Progress has been partnered with it. These can be played separately in the published edition, or connected to the other vignettes, which are drawn from incidental music composed for Little Theatre productions by the Sheffield Educational Settlement, where Heaton was first a student and then lecturer between 1948 and 1952.  These melodies were written for solo recorder (see WH51a). The second of them has been harmonised, assuming that Heaton would have improvised a piano accompaniment for the performances. It also works equally well unaccompanied. Versions for clarinet and strings and flugelhorn and brass band (without soprano cornet) have been prepared.
